John’s Adelaide Hills Farm Stay
We love to see our participants getting out and about, increasing their capacity and independence, whilst of course having a great time! STA (Short Term Accommodation) is a fantastic opportunity for both freedom for the participant whilst allowing family members/carers some, much important, downtime too. In October the wonderful John went on a holiday with some of his Mentors from One Culture. John was involved in the planning process and said he would love to stay somewhere with farm animals, so our dedicated Coordinator found Rollingsview BnB, a beautiful Farm Stay in the Adelaide Hills.
During John’s stay, we focused on independent life skills and being out in nature, including:
- Creating a meal plan, shopping list and doing the grocery shop.
- Cooking meals and cleaning (washing up dishes, making the bed, etc.)
- Getting up early for work!
John enjoyed doing jobs around the farm like collecting eggs, cleaning the barn, feeding the animals, riding on the tractor and planting trees. He worked closely alongside the farmer of the property and had the guidance of his Mentors too.
For downtime, John enjoyed exploring the Adelaide Hills! He climbed Mount Lofty, played mini golf, made candles and visited the Hahndorf Farm Barn.
John’s favourite part of his holiday was learning about how to work on a farm, especially riding the tractor! He is now actively working towards his future goal of becoming a farm hand.
This is such a wonderful example of a participant experiencing new opportunities that led to discovering a love for something that they have not done before.
